A history of computer games Part three: 2000s - the future

What are the significant developments facing gaming at the beginning of the 21st Century?

As time goes by the gaming companies will strive to improve the technology that they have in place already, for example the blu-ray technology used for compact disks which has been developed to improve the amounts of data that can be stored on the disks, which in turn will allow much more data for games. So in the 21st century we will be expecting technological advancements that improve consoles, from processing speed to better on-line gaming.

What pressures does the industry face?

The main pressure that the games industry faces is the escalating costs that arise from developing games. This is due to the fact that the companies behind the games are always looking to improve their games so that they can keep up with the rival gaming companies. Shown below is evidence of how the gaming industries development costs have risen through the years from the early simple games to the more recent games that are being developed now, and also it shows how they are forecasted to rise in the near future. As you can see there is a big change from the earlier games to the games that are developed now, this is because the gaming industry has become more competitive.

What do you want from gaming in the future?

Well as I said in the first of these looking into the history of computer games blogs, I am excited by the prospect of things to come. Because the gaming industry is always looking to improve on what they have got, for example the Nintendo Wii has revolutionized the way that gamers play games, it has become a much more interactive experience. In this blog post I have been asked to look at the the future of gaming and where it is going.

The first thing that I personally want to see from gaming in the future is better game play, because some of the games on the Xbox 360 proves that they can have some jaw dropping graphics but the games are still not that realistic. For instance I was playing madden on the 360 and I found that the games graphics were amazing as expected but they had not put a lot of effort into the gameplay. Because I played the same game on the PS2 and found the PS2 versions gameplay made it more realistic, rather than the higher graphics quality from the 360. I have decided to highlight this as what I would like to see because the gaming industry are wasting countless amounts on the graphics which is a good thing because better graphics adds to the gaming experience, but I feel that the gameplay is the most important thing for a game to appeal to me.

What games would you like to play and how will they be played?

I would like to see a good formula one racing game to come out. Becasue I feel that on the market at the moment the formula one games do not get the recognition like some of the other games such as halo, and pro evolution soccer. I feel that if it was done properly with as much realism as possible. I would like to play it in a game pod which is exactly like a formula one car which simulates the movement of a formula one car, I feel that this would be the ultimate gmaing experience.
